About us
Who are we? — We are a group of enthusiasts with different professions, all of us loving history. Every part of our demonstrations is carefully studied by our members, who have devoted many years to accumulating knowledge from old texts, illustrations, archeological finds, discussions with specialists. The process is always accompanied by numerous experiments, trials and errors until we have reached the perfect result. Through “Sitalk – Historical Reconstructions” Association we would like to share the knowledge and emotions with everyone. Because as the Latin proverb says, “Historia magistra vitae est“ /”History is a teacher of life”/. We are often mistaken for actors, but we show realistic reenactments, from which people can learn something new; understand how the instruments, weapons, clothes, etc. looked in the past and what their functions were.
Why Sitalk? — Sitalk is the name of a ruler. Everyone has heard of Sitalk, the son of Teres, the mighty Thracian ruler of the Odrysian Kingdom. Sitalk is the name of a God; a colossal statue of Apollo Sitalkas was built in Delphi. Sitalk is a victorious shout — Xenophon describes how the Thracians shouted “Sitalk, Sitalk” after their battle dance.
Which periods and nations we recreate? — Let’s start from antiquity with the Thracians and Macedonians from the stormy IV century BC, go through the Roman Empire period with our gladiators and reach to The Migration Period and the Goths who left their mark at those times. We cannot miss the Middle Ages where we have focused on the 13-14 centuries period, recreating medieval Bulgaria, as well as all other nations who passed through our lands.
What do we do? — We organize and participate in historical festivals. We join various events like holidays and celebrations with proper historical demonstrations. We get children in schools acquainted with history by showing what it really was. We participate in historical forums.
What do we show? — Over the years, we have gained solid experience in different aspects of ancient and medieval life. In the antique and medieval themes we show:
- Ancient fashion — how the clothes looked like; what were their names; why they were constructed in a certain way and what their function was; what textiles and materials were used and how they were sewn; what jewelry and accessories our ancient ancestors wore;
- Ancient armament — appearance and development of weapons; their for, and function, who used them and for what reason;
- Religion and rituals — how life and beliefs are connected; what’s the connection of Dionysus and Ares with the Thracians; prophetic rituals; fertility rituals; rituals before battle typical for Thracians, Goths and Romans;
- Gladiators and gladiator battles.
- Slave market.
- Culinary — food and recipes have changed during the centuries; some antique and medieval recipes you will find in our Culinary section.
- Medieval fashion.
- Medieval armament.
- Antique and medieval games that were played for fun as well as for maintaining the skills.
- And many more, because we love learning new things and sharing them with people.
What do we do when we do not participate in festivals? — We talk about history, discuss complicated questions, have fun … We keep in shape by training in historical fencing with antique and medieval weapons. We forge weapons, saw clothes, make dishes, instruments, bags, shoes, jewelry and everything we and our friends need for reenactment.
